Take moment to listen to this beautiful song. It has a powerful message about what it means to answer the call of Christ, to accept his invitation, just as the Disciples did, and follow him.
Was that you I met a long the road, was that you walking with me? I was fine all on my own, but you taught me things I never could have known.
Sunday morning, at Faith Formation, we will discuss what it means to receive an invitation from Christ, and how he is calling us to follow him in the same way he called his Disciples. The story comes from the first chapter of the Gospel of John.
Imagine what it must have been like for the Disciples to first meet Jesus. It’s important to understand that, even though they’d never met him, they likely felt like they knew him. Sort of like how we often feel like we know people who are famous, even without having met them. Now imagine how they must have felt to meet him, and to know that he desired to have a relationship with them.
The Disciples, before they were rightfully known as such, didn’t fully know what it meant to follow him; they didn’t know where they were going and what they might do when they got there. The same is true for us when we accept the call of Christ to follow him into a lifestyle that is marked by the fruits of the Spirit and service to others.
All we know is to trust and obey.
When you hear the word, “invitation,” what comes to mind? For me, I think of a party or a wedding. Often, we feel honored when we receive one, and slighted when we don’t. In the one case, we feel worthy, and in the other, unworthy. This is why it can be so difficult for someone planning an event, like a wedding, to decide who’s in and who’s out.
Fortunately for us, Christ’s invitation is made out to all of us. By his grace we have been deemed worthy, and it’s up to us to receive this invitation.
When I was a kid, anytime I heard someone talking about answering the call of Christ, it was always in reference to choosing a life of pastoral or missionary service. The truth is, answering the call of Christ will look differently for differently people. For many of us, it simply means that you have chosen to glorify God in your life, and to be a representative of the love of Christ in this world.
The Christian who has had the greatest impact on my life wasn’t a pastor or a missionary. He worked on an assembly line for General Motors.
Where do you think Christ may lead you in the future?
See you Sunday morning!
