This morning, I saw an incredible quote on the Facebook page of my old youth pastor. For me, it really encapsulates who Christ is and, consequently, who we are called to be in this world.
As most of you head out for warmer climes on Spring Break, think about this one sentence from Christian author Bob Goff:
Jesus spent His whole life engaging the people most of us have spent our whole lives trying to avoid.
These words are powerful enough to convict even the best among us. At the most basic level, all of us are called to be witnesses to the life and ministry of Christ. Part of that witness is to accept, affirm and engage all people, even those our worst instincts implore us to avoid — especially those, in fact.
Do we avoid the outcast at school? Do we avoid standing up for the bullied, for our peers who are mocked because of the way the look? Do we avoid people who might challenge us to step out of our comfort zone, when our convictions are put to the test?
Christ offers a hand to the fallen, food to the hungry, sight to the blind and love to the unloved. His grace is boundless; his forgiveness is offered to all who would accept it.
To be like Christ, we must first acknowledge that all people are made in the likeness of God. All are sinners; all can be redeemed; all need a savior. Further, we must be willing to give as freely as we have received.
So as you head out for sand and sun, remember to always be salt and light.
Everyone have a safe and fun break! See you soon!
