This week, Matt and I reflect on the meaning of the Bread of Life in John Chapter 6. In this discussion, I quote June Fryman, a Lutheran pastor, who described the Bread of Life in way that truly encapsulates what it means to be sustained by Christ:
“Jesus says, ‘I am the bread of life.’ He is saying that ultimately, he can satisfy our deepest needs and longings. He can make us feel ‘full’ and overflowing with blessing. To live physically, we need bread — but to live spiritually — abundantly and eternally, we need Jesus, who indeed is the bread of life, and who is always ready to welcome you to his table.”
The crowd that followed Jesus didn’t fully comprehend what he was saying to them; in the same way, many of us do not fully grasp the extent to which we need Christ in our daily lives.
